I taught biology and general science at the college level for seven years while at the same time doing graduate (University of Denver) and post-doctoral research (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; University of Arizona) in biochemical ecology and molecular biology of plant-insect interactions. Research projects included the involvement of cytochrome P-450 monooxygenases in biochemical ecology of drosophila of the Sonoran Desert, and in plant responses to wounding. After a hiatus and side trip into the tech industry, I returned to teaching at the high-school level and have been loving every minute of the many years since. I helped design and open Empire High School in the Vail Unified School District in Arizona, one of the first schools centered from the ground up on using laptops instead of textbooks. I primarily teach introductory Biology, Biology Honors, and AP Biology.
I joined the Beilstein lab in 2013 through a Research Corporation for Science Advancement Partners in Science fellowship. I have spent most summers since then working on many fascinating and fun projects.
